How do I know if a currency broker's quote is a good rate?
Compare its rate with the mid-market rate at the same moment. The gap, times the amount, is the price: 1% on £100,000 is £1,000. Then set it against providers that publish their price: on £100,000 into euros, Atlantic Money costs £3 and Wise £249.52, about 0.25%. Checked October 2026.

Price the quote yourself
A broker that says 'no fees' is still charging: the price is the difference between the rate it offers and the mid-market rate, the midpoint between what banks pay to buy and to sell the currency. Ask for the quote, and at the same moment look up the mid-market rate for the same pair. Divide the gap by the mid-market rate to get the margin as a percentage, and multiply by the amount you are sending.
Timing matters because rates move by the second. A quote read against a mid-market rate from an hour earlier can look far better or worse than it is. If the broker will hold the quote, compare it while it is held.
What to compare it with
The providers that do publish their whole price give you a benchmark. On £100,000 into euros, Atlantic Money charges £3 at the mid-market rate and Wise £249.52, about 0.25% of the amount. A broker's quote that works out dearer than that is paying for something else, and you should know what.

What a broker can give you that an app cannot
9 of the 15 quote-only providers on this site offer forward contracts, which fix a rate now for a payment due later: useful when a property completion date is months away and a fall in the pound would raise the price. Most also give you a named dealer. Those are worth something; how much is the question the margin answers.

- Can I negotiate the margin?
- Brokers that quote on request set the margin per client, and several say it falls on larger amounts. A competing quote, or the cost at a provider that publishes its price, is the evidence that moves it.

- Every provider on this site lists its FCA status and firm reference number. Look the number up on the FCA register, and check the firm named there is the one you are paying.
