Formation

Do I need a registered agent for a US LLC?

Yes. Wyoming requires every business entity to name a registered agent at a physical Wyoming address to accept legal papers. Living abroad, you cannot be your own, so a formation service supplies one. Most include the first year; renewals run from $25 a year at Wyoming Registered Agent Services to $299 at Firstbase. What the agent is for

A registered agent is the person or company the state can reach when someone needs to serve legal papers on your LLC. Wyoming's own guidance puts it in one line: all business entities filed in Wyoming need a registered agent to accept service of process. The articles of organization will not be accepted without one, and the agent signs a consent to the appointment.

The agent has to be reachable in the state. Wyoming allows an individual resident in Wyoming, or a domestic or foreign business authorised to transact business there, and requires a physical Wyoming address. A drop box is not accepted, and a PO box counts only alongside a physical address.

Why a non-resident cannot be their own

Wyoming's instructions note that you as an individual might qualify to be the registered agent for your own company. That clause turns on residence: the agent must be a Wyoming resident with a Wyoming street address. A founder in London, Lagos or Lisbon does not qualify, however the company is owned.

This is the reason formation services for non-residents bundle the agent with the filing. Their office is the Wyoming address on your articles, they receive whatever is served there, and they pass it on. Commercial agents also list what else the address is used for; Northwest, for instance, describes scanning the mail it receives for the company and posting it to an online account.

What it costs, by provider

Every provider in the comparison supplies an agent, and 5 of the 9 Wyoming-priced providers include the first year at no charge. The difference is what happens in year two. Some bill the agent as a separate annual renewal; others fold it into an annual subscription that also covers the formation fee, which the table shows as “In plan”. A subscription is not free, so the fair comparison is the annual cost from year two onward, not the renewal line alone.

Stripe Atlas is the outlier: it forms Delaware companies only, and its agent renewal is Delaware's, not Wyoming's.

Every figure here was checked against the provider’s own page in Sep 2026, except where a date is shown against the figure. Figures are rechecked at least every 90 days; one past that is marked “Recheck due”.

Changing agents later

You are not tied to the agent you form with. Wyoming charges a filing fee of five dollars to appoint a new registered agent and office, and the same per entity when an agent resigns. The switching cost is the fee and the paperwork, so a renewal price that looks steep in year two is negotiable in the plainest way: by moving.

Whatever the fee, the requirement does not end once the articles are filed: the company needs an agent for as long as it exists, so treat the renewal as a fixed annual cost of holding it, like the state's own annual report.

Related questions

Can a friend in the US be my registered agent?
Only if they live in Wyoming and are willing to have their street address on the company's public filing and be available to receive legal papers there. A friend in another state does not qualify for a Wyoming LLC.
Does the registered agent file my annual report or taxes?
Not by default. The agent's legal job is to accept service of process. Anything more — reminders, filings, mail forwarding — is a service the provider chooses to offer, and the comparison prices only what each publishes.
Is the agent's address my company's address?
It is the registered office address on the articles. Wyoming also asks for a mailing address and a principal office address, and those can be elsewhere.
What does it cost to switch agents in Wyoming?
The state's fee to appoint a new registered agent and office is five dollars, on the Secretary of State's current fee schedule.
